SECOND ANNUAL
Iowa Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference

Living Dr. King's Dream

November 8-9, 2008

on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames

The mathematical sciences departments of Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa are pleased to announce the second annual Iowa Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference.

This conference introduces potential graduate students to the mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, and science departments at all three Iowa Regents institutions: Iowa State University, University of Iowa; and the University of Northern Iowa.

Student participants will spend time with faculty from all three schools, get advice on graduate school applications, attend seminars on graduate school preparation and expectations, and learn about the free open-source computer mathematics system, Sage.

Participating faculty enjoy an unparalleled opportunity to network with colleagues from around the country and with representatives of some NSF Mathematical Sciences Institutes.

Welcome from 2008 Hosts, Department Chairs Wolfgang Kliemann and Kenneth Koehler

We enthusiastically welcome student and faculty participants to the Fall 2008 Alliance Conference on the campus of Iowa State University! The fall conferences are an integral part of the Alliance program as they not only allow for discussion of research, but also for exploring, networking and professional inspiration.

As we work collaboratively with our colleagues from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa, it is our shared vision that the professional development opportunities presented by this conference will lead to a deeper understanding of different areas of mathematics and statistics and also contribute to community building, both essential ingredients when we look at raising the number of members of underrepresented groups in the academic world of the mathematical sciences.

On behalf of the three Institutions, we offer our best wishes for a successful conference and an interesting weekend.

Host Campuses

The conference rotates between the campuses of Iowa State University, University of Iowa; and the University of Northern Iowa.

2007 participants found a lot to smile about.

Past participatnt Victor Ocasio says...

"What surprised me the most was the openness of professors and grad students to share their ideas and answers questions."

"You get the chance to meet people that share your same dreams and aspirations, even though your life experiences are different.   It gives you a fresh view of academic life."

Grateful that his mentor suggested he participate in the MSA conference, Ocasio found the experience positive and influential in giving him a new way to think about doctoral studies, and see them as an achievable goal.

“It takes you out of the microcosm that is your university.  Discussing ideas and experiences is what a researcher's job is mostly about.”

--Victor Ocasio, graduate student in pure mathematics
