Math Combos

Minors and second majors, or a program of study in math + application area are encouraged for math majors, since the mathematician’s training is applied with powerful effect in a wide variety of disciplines.

Examples are finance or economics, engineering, computing, physics or chemistry.

Undergraduate Study

In recent years, the importance of mathematics has grown in dozens of fields.  Today mathematicians play a major role in biological research, weather prediction, economics, computer security, finance, the design of search engines, the finding of new natural resources, and the design of sailboats.  The faculty in the Department of Mathematics can help you create a program of study to give you a strong mathematical background directed towards any of a number of application areas.

The Mathematics Department also has strong programs to prepare students for more traditional areas such as secondary teaching, an area in which major shortages are predicted in the next few years.  We also offer strong programs in pure and applied mathematics that prepare a student well for graduate study or employment in the private sector.

"One of the big misapprehensions about mathematics that we perpetrate in our classrooms is that the teacher always seems to know the answer to any problem that is discussed. This gives students the idea that there is a book somewhere with all the right answers to all of the interesting questions, and that teachers know those answers. And if one could get hold of the book, one would have everything settled. That's so unlike the true nature of mathematics."
