NSFNSF IGERT preliminary proposals

The National Science Foundation is continuing the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program. Proposals for new IGERT projects as well as for renewals of existing IGERT projects are invited. The IGERT program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers who will pursue careers in research and education with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

An institution may submit no more than four preliminary proposals either as a single institution or as a lead institution in a multi-institution preliminary proposal. One may participate as PI or co-PI in only one proposal submission.

Guidelines are available at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08540/nsf08540.htm
Preproposals should be submitted to the VPR office by close of business on Monday, March 3, 2008. Preproposals may be submitted to Dorothy Pimlott (dpimlott@iastate.edu) via e-mail.

A review committee will choose the projects to be forwarded to NSF. Those selected will be notified by March 13. Preliminary proposals are due to NSF April 24, 2008. Below are the guidelines that should be followed in preparing your preproposal for the internal review:

1) Prepare a brief description of the project - no more than two pages.
2) Provide a discussion as to who at ISU will be involved, who will be benefited, and how they will
benefit – no more than a page.

MAA meetingIowa MAA Meeting

The Iowa MAA meeting this year will be held at Simpson College Indianola, Iowa April 25-26, 2008

For graduate students these meetings are a good place to give a talk in a supportive and convenient location. For faculty these meetings are a good place to meet faculty from other Iowa universities and
colleges. Consider giving a talk at these meetings.

We are fortunate to have as our featured speaker Carl Cowen, past president of the MAA. Prof. Cowen will speak Friday night on ''Connections Between Mathematics and Biology'', and Saturday morning on ''Rearranging the Alternating Harmonic Series.''

We also hope for a varied collection of talks from our own members.
If you would like to give a talk at the meeting please, if possible, use the electronic submission form at:
http://www.central.edu/maa/ProposalSubmit.asp
Proposals for talks are due by Friday, March 21, 2008.

If you are unable to use the submission site please send the following to Larry Naylor at one of the addresses listed below:
Title of your talk
A short abstract
Speaking day/time preference: Friday afternoon; Saturday morning; Saturday afternoon
