Hogben's "A Public Contest" winners

Finalists in the "by hand" division work furiously, using calculators only for artithmetic (including the extraction of roots). From left: Kristy Olsen, Kellie Kendrick, Hannah Park, Adam Venem and Lyndee Heemstra. Park and Venem tied for second place.

Hogben's contest, which had 18 contestants, saw two winners: Lyndee Heemstra, who used Viete's method to successfully solve four of six cubics in the "by hand" division, and Gandharv Kashinath, who programmed Cardano's method and successfully solved all 12 cubic equations presented.
