Week of March 31, 2008
Congratulations, Team!
Teammates Qi "Dave" Gan, Hannah Park and Nicholas Allendorf scored 90 points to beat out 20 other teams competing at the fourteenth annual Iowa Collegiate Math Competition held on March 8, 2008 at Drake University. Kacy Messerschmidt also participated in the event as a member of the Graceland team. Dr. Stephen Willson advises the team.
Second and third places went to teams from Grinnell with 88 and 77 points respectively. Eleven colleges and universities participated in the event.
Congratulations to all the competitors. Later in April, the trophy, topped with a glass Klein bottle, will return to spend another year in Carver 396.
VEISHEA 2008: Math and Voting
The Math Department is joining with others in the College of LAS as they conduct a straw poll on Saturday, April 12, under the Big Top on Central Campus. We will have computers set up to allow visitors to experiment with different methods of voting. See www.mathaware.org for more informaion.

Wang Final Defense
Zhongming (Eric) Wang will give his final defense on Monday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m.
in 390 Carver. The title of his dissertation is Development of level set methods for computing semi-classical limit in Schrondinger equations with various potentials. Hailiang Liu is Wang's Major Professor.
